Мишень из Виндоланды

По сообщению на странице Facebook фонда Виндоланды 1 июля во рву времени Северов был найден коровий череп "с отверстиями от болтов баллист и стрел", явно использовавшийся в качестве мишени.

Вряд ли, конечно, это - отверстия от наконечников болтов стрелометных баллист, если только стрельба не велась со значительной дистанции.

Вроде ведь были и более ранние находки таких побитых стрелами коровьих черепов, причем в той же Виндоланде. Если не ошибаюсь, Фёжер о них упоминал.
А насчет стрел, так у римлян трехлопастные наконечники применялись, а здесь все пирамидальные. Правда, для болтов катапульты мелкие они какие-то. Может быть в самом деле стрелы или, как вариант, небольшие катапульты, наподобие той, что была найдена в Ксантене.

Да, были. И в той же Виндоланде (см. картинки внизу).

Если не ошибаюсь, Фёжер о них упоминал.

О них много кто упоминал: Кулстон, Голдсуорси, Махлаюк и Негин... Но у Фёжера не видел вроде.

А насчет стрел, так у римлян трехлопастные наконечники применялись, а здесь все пирамидальные.

Разные у них применялись, и пирамидальные тоже. Особенно в III веке. См., например:

3. Tanged, 'bodkin': A type with a square or triangular cross-section, c.4cm long. Erdmann lists British examples from Newstead (Roxs.), Corbridge (Northumb.), Poltross Burn (Northumb.), Kirkby Thore (Westmoreland) and Richborough (Kent).[SUP]11[/SUP] This type of arrow may have been shot against ox-skull targets found at Corbridge and Chesterholm (Northumb.) but it occurs much more frequently on the Continent (Calibre below),
4. Socketed, 'bodkin': A long, slim head, square or rhomboid in section, c. 5cm long. Few occur in Britain, rather more on the German limes. An example comes from Richborough (Kent).[SUP]12[/SUP]

The tanged, trilobate type continued through the 3rd century, and a new related type, also triple- or quadruple-vaned, but with a long socket, was found at Caerleon and Corbridge. Tanged or socketed bodkin heads with triangular or square sections appear frequently in Germany, and triangular or 'leaf-bladed flat heads with tangs or sockets, an easier form to manufacture, occur across the Empire.[SUP]35[/SUP]
