The 2016 Conference Theme: Cavalry in the Roman World

The theme of the 2016 meeting is ‘Cavalry in the Roman World’. This covers all aspects of horse-riding, mounted warfare, equipment design and military equine culture, hopefully with a reconstruction element. In keeping with the broad RoMEC remit, not just Roman but Hellenic, Mesopotamian, Iranian, Central Asiatic, Iron Age European and North African cavalry traditions will be included. In addition there will be a session of papers dedicated specifically to ‘Hadrian’s Cavalry’.

Inclusion of the National Museum of Scotland galleries in the conference excursion is specifically intended to interface with the cavalry equipment from Newstead (Borders) which includes saddle fittings used in current reconstructions, and a number of fine cavalry sports helmets. The conference will also be an important precursor to the multi-venue exhibition with a Roman cavalry theme to be held in 2017 at sites along Hadrian’s Wall.

Displays

Following the strong RoMEC tradition, there will be re-enactment displays during the conference and interested organizations should approach the conference organizer.

Excursions

One full-day coach excursion will visit Roman military sites along the Antonine Wall. This will include sculpture and artifact displays in the National Museum of Scotland (Edinburgh) and the University Museum (Glasgow).

Conference attendees might like also to visit in their own time the small Carpow (Fife) display in the McManus Galleries, Dundee, which includes inscriptions, sculpture and ceramics, plus the best preserved piece of Roman scale armor found on any site in Europe.

St Andrews Cathedral Museum includes the St Andrews Sarcophagus bearing reliefs with some Pictish equipment details. St Andrews Castle has a broader military interest in the excavated and accessible siege-mines/counter-mines.
